Brief report of the celebration of Deaf Blind Day, 2018

Every year, 27th June is observed as Deaf Blind Day commemorating the birth anniversary of Helen Adams Keller. As on earlier occasions, the State Commissionerate for the Persons with Disabilities, West Bengal under the Dept. of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal arranged to observe“ Deaf Blind Day, 2018” on 27th June, 2018, for generating awareness on Deaf–Blindness and Multiple Disabilities. This year, an Awareness Programme was held at Minerva Theatre Kolkata. Sri Debabrata Chattaraj, State Commissioner (Disabilities) West Bengal, inaugurated the programme at Minerva Theatre.

Dr Suchandra Mukherjee, Dept of Neo Natology , SSKM Hospital discussed the “Causes and Remedies of Deaf Blindness” and four persons with deaf blindness attached to ‘’Project Deaf Blind” presented the challenges faced by the Deaf Blind persons in the form of a group discussion. Prosthetic Aids like Smart cane and Hearing Aids are distributed among Persons with Disabilities.

The deaf and blind students of various institutions presented a colourful cultural event in the second half of the programme. Approximately three hundred and seventy five participants from Non Government organisations like Voice of World, Blind Boys Academy, Narendrapur,Society for the Visually handicapped, Graham Bell centre for the Deaf (Pandua),Calcutta Blind School, Bidhan Sarani Integrated Society for Physically challenged and many others participated in the programme.
